![]() It’s not as if Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gets Anuradha Verma, the anguished legal eagle who takes up cudgels for people whose guilt is beyond doubt, all wrong. ( See Pics of Aishwarya with parents and mom-in-law at Jazbaa screening) ![]() The statement is redundant: if ‘Jazbaa’ was as taut as its origin, the lead actor would be complementing and pushing the theme, not created simply to overpower the whole. ![]() Says a character in the film, “yeh Bollywood hai”. She is framed as any superstar Bollywood hero would: too many solo scenes, a great deal of slo-mo, and lots of opportunity for her to ‘act’. Result: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is not just an element in the crime drama. Anuradha has only seven days before the trial ends and race against time and corruption to save her daughter. The trouble with the film, all familiar green-tones and dark angles and panoramic views of the Mumbai skyline, is that it sticks too close to its brief, which is, clearly, to bring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan back in our midst. The prosecutor is a longtime rival who is determined to defeat Anuradha professionally. Anuradha’s friend Yohan, a suspended policeman with disregard for old rules, is too tangled up in his own mess to help her. The abductor watches Anuradha’s every move, forces her to comply and orchestrates a perfect crime by outwitting the police. Synopsis: Prominent criminal lawyer Anuradha Verma’s daughter is abducted, and the abductor informs her that the only way she will ever see her daughter again is by defending a convicted felon, charged with brutally raping and murdering a young woman. The wicked climax of Jazbaa makes it a satisfying watch, but not a watertight thriller. ![]() The thrilling bits are saved for the last in this succinct thriller, making you wonder why the bits about retribution, justice, crime and punishment were not explored in depth. The film looks at how rape cases are shoddily handled by Indian courts and dwells briefly on how a manipulative criminal can walk away scot-free if aided by a smart lawyer. The whodunit also addresses the issue of violence against women, in an entertaining manner. Jazbaa’s taut pace and streamlined approach towards the second half glosses over these glaring inadequacies. ![]()
